Parts On The Van, Not On Order

This is the bit we would actually argue with people about.

A spare cut and programmed from a working key is a straightforward job. All keys lost is a bigger one, and it happens at the worst possible moment, usually on a job, usually with tools in the back and somebody waiting. The difference in cost and hassle between the two is not small.

Nobody gets a spare van key made because they feel like it. They get one made after the week they lost the only one. If you run a van and there is one key for it, that is the job to book before you need us in a hurry.

Deadlocks, Slam Locks And What Is Actually In The Back

Factory van locks are built to a price. They are not built for a van parked on a street overnight with a few thousand pounds of tools in it.

We fit deadlocks and slam locks. A deadlock is a separate lock through the door that does not rely on the van’s own central locking, so it holds when the original lock has been attacked. A slam lock locks itself the moment the door shuts, which takes the decision away from you on a day when you are in and out of the back twenty times and thinking about the job rather than the door.

Here is the honest version. Fitting these after a break in is the most common time we get asked, and it is the worst time to do it, because by then the tools are gone and the insurance conversation has started. The van security job is cheap compared with replacing a set of tools. It is also boring, which is why it gets put off.

Lockouts And Keys Shut In The Back

Keys locked in the cab, keys shut in the load area, a key snapped off in the door, central locking that has stopped responding on one side.

All Keys Lost, And What Actually Happens

People picture something dramatic. It is calmer than that.

We read the vehicle’s own security information through the diagnostic port, cut a new blade to match the locks, and then write the new key to the van so the immobiliser accepts it. On most makes we can also wipe the keys that are missing, so a key lost in a pub car park six months ago cannot start your van afterwards. Worth asking for if the keys were stolen rather than mislaid.

It takes longer than cutting a spare from a working key, usually an hour or so rather than twenty minutes, and on some newer vans the security data has to come from the manufacturer, which adds time. You will be told which of those you are dealing with on the phone, not when somebody is already parked outside.

If You Run More Than One Van

Fleets are a different conversation and a cheaper one per vehicle, because the travelling is done once.

Spare keys cut and programmed for the whole fleet in a session, deadlocks fitted across several vans on the same visit, keys colour coded so your drivers can tell them apart. If you are running three or four vans off one set of keys each, that is a risk sitting on the books waiting for the morning somebody loses one.

Bring proof the van is yours. V5, insurance, or a letter from the company if it is a fleet vehicle. We ask every time, and so should anyone else you call.
