Car Key Replacement London

A customer came to us in November 2024 after two other locksmiths had already turned him away. Neither of them carried a blank that matched his key. We had it, and he drove home the same day.

He wrote about it afterwards: a wider range of blank key types than the couple of locksmiths he had gone to first, who did not have his key type. That is the whole job, really. Having the right bit of metal and the right kit on the van when somebody needs it.

You Do Not Need The Old Key

This is the thing that surprises people most, and it is why some of them waste a day looking.

For almost every common make we can generate a brand new key and program it to the car where the car is standing. Lost the lot? Fine. Dropped them somewhere between the pub and the car park, put them in a bin by accident, had them stolen? Still fine. We do not need the original to make you a new one.

That covers plain keys, transponder keys with a chip in them, remote fobs, and proximity keys for push button start. One customer needed a spare for a keyless start car at short notice in September 2025 and got it the same day. If the car is on a driveway, in a street, in a car park or in a works yard, that is where we do it.

What It Costs

A replacement car key with the programming is usually £200 to £250.

That is not a number we picked for the website. It is the price band our own customers select when they leave us a Google review, and they tick “reasonable price” next to it. Joe P did in October 2026 for a flip key with a blade and remote programming. A R did for a spare key plus two existing keys reprogrammed, and that one was finished in under an hour.

It moves with the make, model and year, so ring with the registration or send a photo of the key. You get the price before anyone sets off. No call out fee. Nothing added for evenings, weekends or bank holidays. Nothing added when we arrive.

One customer was quoted over £180 elsewhere for a 2016 Toyota Aygo remote and called what we charged extremely reasonable. Another rang round first, got what she described as ridiculous prices, sent us a photo of her key, was given an exact figure on the phone, and paid a fraction of the other quotes. We were with her in thirty minutes.

Bring It To Us Or We Come To You

We have a staffed stall in the Asda car park at Edmonton Green, N9 0AL. Middle of the car park, at the Asda end. You can walk up to it and there is somebody there.

So there are two ways to do this. Drive the car to us, hand the key over, and go and do your shopping while it is done. Joe P did exactly that, had a coffee, came back to a finished job. Or we come out to your vehicle for a small extra charge, which is what you want when the car is not going anywhere.

Almost no mobile auto locksmith in London has a place you can actually turn up to. Most are a phone number and a van. Being able to choose is worth something, and it is cheaper if you can bring the car to us.

We take card at the stall. If you are having several keys done we put different coloured covers on them so you can tell them apart afterwards, which sounds like nothing until you are standing at a front door with five identical keys in your hand.

Why You Get Told To Go To The Dealer

Here is the bit the trade does not say out loud.

Plenty of auto locksmiths carry a narrow range of blanks and a programming kit that covers the popular stuff. When your key is not on the van, you get told the dealer is the only option. That is not a fact about your car. It is a fact about their van.

The dealer route costs more, takes longer, and usually means paying to recover a car that cannot be driven to get it there. We carry a wider range of blanks than most, which is exactly why the man in November 2024 got sorted by us after two other people had sent him away. Ring and ask before you book a recovery truck.

We will also tell you when we cannot do something. Some vehicles genuinely do need the dealer. You will hear that on the phone rather than after somebody has driven out to you and charged for the trip.

Keys We Repair Instead Of Replacing

Not everything needs a new key, and we would rather say so.

One customer had a fob where the unlock button had stopped responding. We repaired it. Another had a damaged fob, repaired as well. Someone else needed the batteries in their car key changing and we did it inside the hour. None of those people paid for a replacement key, because none of them needed one.

Broken blade snapped off in your hand, casing cracked, buttons worn flat, one function working and the other not. Send a photo before you assume the worst. A repair is cheaper and quicker, and if it will not hold we will tell you that too.

How Long It Takes

Near Edmonton it is quick. Our own customers report under ten minutes, fifteen minutes, half an hour. One of them timed a key cut at twelve seconds during the school run. Another had seven keys of different types done, two full sets of them inside ten minutes.

Further out it depends who is free and what the traffic is doing. We work with auto locksmiths we know across London who have their own vans and their own kit, so the person who arrives in West London is usually local to West London. We will give you a real time on the phone for where you actually are, rather than printing a number here that is only true for one postcode.

Once somebody is with you, most car key jobs are finished inside the hour.

What To Have Ready When You Ring

Four things and we can price it on the spot. The registration. The make, model and year. Whether you have lost every key or still have one that works. Where the car is parked right now.

If you still have a working key, say so, because a spare is a simpler and cheaper job than all keys lost. If the key is broken rather than missing, send a photo.

Bring something that proves the car is yours. The V5, insurance documents, a driving licence that matches the address. Any auto locksmith who does not ask you for that is one to be wary of, because the same skill that gets you into your car gets somebody else into it too.
